How to become a Engineering Manager

Move from being responsible for your output to being responsible for a team's outcomes.

Before you start this one

Around 4+ years as an engineer, ideally with some mentoring or tech-lead experience, and a genuine interest in other people's growth.

Best for

Engineers who get more satisfaction from unblocking others than from shipping the code themselves, and who can sit with ambiguity and conflict.

Maybe not for you if

Anyone taking it because it looks like the next promotion. It is a career change, not a level up, and the skills you built as an IC are not the ones you will be judged on.

The 4 phases

What each phase gets you to. The steps, resources and checkpoint inside each one open with a free account.

  1. Phase 1 - Test the fit before you commit

    6-12 weeks

Goal: Find out whether you actually enjoy the work, while you can still change your mind cheaply.

3 steps · ends in a build deliverable · assumes several years as an engineer, someone junior you can genuinely help, or a project you can lead

  2. Phase 2 - People fundamentals

    6-12 weeks

Goal: Run one-to-ones people would not cancel, give feedback that changes behaviour, and sit inside a conflict without flinching.

4 steps · ends in a build deliverable

  3. Phase 3 - Delivery and the system around the team

    8-16 weeks

Goal: Make the team's work predictable without turning yourself into a process bottleneck.

5 steps · ends in a scored checkpoint (60% to clear)

  4. Phase 4 - Growing people and holding standards

    6-12 weeks

Goal: Run hiring, growth and performance conversations that are fair and defensible.

4 steps · ends in a build deliverable

What hiring actually looks like here

Management is typically an internal move rather than an external hire at first, and most companies now run a parallel senior IC track you can pick instead. In Indian service companies the word manager often means delivery or project management rather than people management, so read what the role actually owns: headcount, appraisals and hiring, or only a schedule. Most organisations will expect you to have led projects or mentored engineers before handing you a team.

We claim no placement outcome, salary or success rate. This describes what is commonly reported about the role, nothing more. Linked resources are credited to their authors.
