How the test works

CURRENT (2025-26) pattern: IBM's fresher/campus OA is now a two-section online written test on HackerRank - a Coding section (DSA, mostly arrays & strings; ~2 problems in ~55-60 min) plus a short English MCQ section (~10 questions in 10 min). Each of the two sections is an ELIMINATION round. This is followed by a Group Discussion, then a combined Technical + HR interview. RECENT CHANGE - the biggest thing to know: IBM phased out its earlier game-based Cognitive Ability Assessment ('Cognify': Shortcuts, Gridlock, Resemble, Number Bubbles, Tally Up, Proof It) and the Learning Agility / psychometric test. PrepInsta's current syllabus page explicitly labels these 'not asked anymore' and warns that many prep sites still show outdated aptitude content (number series, quantitative reasoning) that is no longer core. So despite the 'cognitive + coding' framing, the live 2025-26 test is effectively CODING + ENGLISH; the surviving 'cognitive/technical' element is the CS-fundamentals/aptitude MCQs some drives bundle into the coding round. VARIATION is real - do not treat any single structure as exact: it changes by hiring cycle, by role (Associate System Engineer vs Software Developer vs Intern), and by campus vs off-campus. Some 2025 campus drives (per a GeeksforGeeks 2025 on-campus experience) ran a 60-90 min HackerRank test mixing MCQ + coding (DSA/aptitude/OOPs), then a separate AI-proctored SPOKEN English assessment, then an in-person coding + English round - so total online time ranges ~60-90 min depending on whether an MCQ block and/or spoken round is included. Coding is auto-graded on HackerRank against visible AND hidden test cases; multiple candidate reports stress that missing hidden/edge cases (partial passes) commonly triggers rejection, which is why the raw 'easy-moderate' problems feel harder in practice. No negative marking is generally reported on coding; English has been reported both with and without negative marking across drives.

What to prep

  • Arrays & strings DSA FIRST - the single most-reported topic (string manipulation, parity/adjacent-element problems); then recursion, sorting/searching, hashing, linked lists, stacks/queues, basic trees & DP
  • Practice on HackerRank under time (target ~2 problems in ~55-60 min) and make solutions pass ALL test cases including hidden edge cases - partial passes commonly auto-reject
  • CS-fundamentals MCQs: OOPs, DBMS, OS, core programming (for the technical-MCQ block some drives bundle in)
  • English MCQs: grammar, active/passive voice, error-spotting, synonyms/antonyms, prepositions, tenses, vocabulary, comprehension - 10 Q in 10 min, so pace matters
  • Spoken-English fluency & pronunciation for the AI-proctored speaking round used in some 2025 campus drives
  • Group Discussion practice + Technical/HR interview prep (solid projects on the resume, core CS, IBM values)
  • Use LeetCode easy-medium as the calibration bar; IBM problems skew easy-medium but reward clean logic and edge-case handling

Cut-offs & eligibility (indicative)

Cutoffs are NOT officially published by IBM and third-party reports conflict: some drives apply per-section cutoffs (each of the two online sections is an elimination round), others report no fixed cutoff. In practice the coding section is gated by passing all/most (including hidden) test cases rather than a stated percentage. Separately, ELIGIBILITY gating (not a test cutoff) is commonly ~60% in 10th & 12th and 65% or 6.5 CGPA in graduation with no active backlogs - but this varies by drive. Do not treat any specific cutoff number as official.
